Strength and Learning Through Horses is now recruiting for Yard Groom to join the team on a 35 hours per week contract to work alongside the yard team to care for horses and support in managing the yard. This is a great opportunity for an individual who is looking to develop their skills in horse care and yard management. There will be opportunities to help run equine assisted learning and therapy programmes and to receive comprehensive training in this field. Hours: 35 hours per week to be worked over 7 days. This will mostly be Monday-Friday but there may be a requirement to do a half day on one weekend day with time back in lieu during the week. Duration: 12 month contract with potential for renewal Location: Strength and Learning Through Horses, Greengates Stables, Mays Lane, Barnet, EN5 2AQ What does the role involve • Mucking out stables and field management • Support in maintaining, and health and safety, of the yard • Working as a sessional staff member when required to support the delivery of equine assisted education programmes • Providing horse care including bandaging and application of medication • Turning out and bringing in horses • Feeding, watering and haying • Ability to work under work-related pressure (deadlines and priorities) • Horse Grooming, clipping and trimming • Assist in managing contractors e.g Vet, farrier, dentist, other contractors • Assist in maintaining and managing equipment • Keeping staff and volunteers informed of any issues that may arise About the applicant • Experience of handling horses is not a pre-requisite for this role but where there is no experience we would look for a strong explanation as to why the person would like to apply for this role • Committed to the role and be able to take pride in your work • Fit and healthy for the role and the demands of outdoor all-weather activities. • Hardworking and not afraid of physical work. • Must be able to be self-motivated, work alone at times and as part of a team. • Reliable, friendly and able to communicate with the team • Comfortable with commuting to and from work • Basic understanding of Health and Safety at work and manual handling What’s in it for you • The opportunity to work with a friendly, flexible team of highly knowledgeable people who are passionate about the charity and its work • Contributing to tackling youth mental health crisis – with a great team • Benefit from investment and a genuine commitment to you, your training and career development including: • Training towards British Horse Society qualifications and or Professional Groom Apprenticeship • Regular (bi-weekly) training in various areas of horse and human psychology, safeguarding & first aid • Basic Salary £20,820.80 • Development of skills in specialist Equine and Therapy field We would be delighted to receive applications from young people who have attended a programme with us, but this is not essential.
