These responsibilities can vary.
1. Feeding and Watering
Preparing and distributing feed according to each horse's dietary requirements.
Ensuring fresh water is available at all times.
Administering supplements or medications in feed when necessary.
2. Mucking Out and Bedding
Cleaning out stables
Keeping the stable environment clean and comfortable for the horses.
3. Grooming
Brushing and grooming horses.
4. Exercise and Handling
Turning horses out.
Bringing horses back in.
Preparing horses for riding.
5. Tack Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning and maintaining tack.
Ensuring all tack is in good repair and properly stored.
6. General Health Monitoring
Checking horses for signs of illness, injury, or lameness.
Reporting any health concerns to the yard manager.
Administering basic first aid for minor injuries under guidance.
Assisting with veterinary care, such as holding horses during treatment.
7. Stable Yard Maintenance
Sweeping and tidying stable areas, barn, and yard.
Cleaning water buckets, feed troughs, and equipment regularly.
Maintaining paddock and field areas.
8. Assisting Farriers, Vets, and Dentists
Holding horses for the farrier.
Assisting vets during health checks or treatments.
Helping equine dentists during teeth cleaning or dental work.
9. Blanketing and Clipping
Putting on and removing rugs or blankets depending on weather conditions.
Clipping horses’ coats if necessary.
10. Transporting Horses
Helping with loading and unloading horses from trailers or horseboxes.
Preparing horses for travel.
Cleaning and preparing tack and equipment for travel.
11. Record Keeping
Keeping logs of feed, medication, and exercise schedules.
Recording health or behaviour changes and any vet treatments.
